Maunsel House is a magnificent 13th Century Manor set in 100 acres of stunning parkland at the heart of a sprawling 2,000 acre Estate, comprising of farms, lakes, woodlands, walnut groves, orchards, Somerset wetlands, cottages and ancient barns. The ancestral seat of the Slade family and home of the 7th baronet Sir Benjamin Slade, the house can boast such visitors as Geoffrey Chaucer who wrote part of the Canterbury Tales whilst staying here. The beautiful grounds and spacious rooms provide both privacy and a unique atmosphere for any special event. Available for weddings, we are licensed for civil ceremonies outside in the antique bandstand or inside in the large regency ballroom, the wedding breakfast can be under the garlanded pergola in the walled garden or in the ballroom surrounded by old masters on the walls. There are thirteen luxurious bedrooms, many with four poster beds crowned by the Kings Room which holds the great bed of Maunsel, an Elizabethan four poster 8’6" wide and 6’ long. There are four picturesque cottages on the estate, all within walking distance of the House offering a further fourteen bedrooms, the cottages are available for additional accommodation for the weddings and holiday breaks. Robin Hood’s Hut is an 18th century garden building with two distinct faces. On one side it is a small rustic cottage, with thatched roof and bark clad door while on the other is an elegant pavilion complete with umbrello (or stone canopy). In the 1740s, Charles Kemeys Tynte began to transform the landscape around Halswell House into one of the finest Georgian gardens in the south west. He built several follies including Robin Hood’s Hut in 1767. It is cared for by The Landmark Trust, a building preservation charity who let it for holidays.
