Leighton Hall is one of the most beauti-fully sited houses in the British Isles, situated in a bowl of parkland, with the whole panorama of the Lakeland Fells rising behind. The Hall’s neo-gothic facade was superimposed on an 18th century house, which, in turn, had been built on the ruins of the original medieval house. The present owner is descended from Adam d’Avranches who built the first house in 1246. The whole house is, today, lived in by the Reynolds family whose emphasis is put on making visitors feel welcome in a family home. Mr Reynolds is also descended from the founder of Gillow and Company of Lancaster. Connoisseurs of furniture will be particularly interested in the many 18th century Gillow pieces, some of which are unique. Fine pictures, clocks, silver and objets d’art are also on display. Birds of Prey Flying Display at 3.30pm on open days. Gardens: The main garden has a continuous herbaceous border with rose covered walls, while the Walled Garden contains flowering shrubs, a herb garden and an ornamental vegetable garden with a caterpillar maze. Beyond is the Woodland Walk where wild flowers abound from early spring.
