The history of Althorp is the history of a family. The Spencer’s have lived and died here for over five centuries and nineteen generations. Since the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, Althorp has become known across the world, but before that tragic event, connoisseurs had heard of this most classic of English stately homes on account of the magnificence of its contents and the beauty of its setting. Althorp contains a fascinating variety of pictures, furniture and ceramics, a result of one family’s uninterrupted occupancy for over 500 years. Enjoy the work of Van Dyck, Rubens, Gainsborough and Reynolds in one of Europe’s finest private collections of the decorative arts. Next to the mansion at Althorp lies the honey-coloured stable block, a truly breathtaking building which at one time accommodated up to 100 horses and 40 grooms. The stables are now the setting for the Exhibition celebrating the life of Diana, Princess of Wales. All visitors are invited to view the House, Exhibition and Grounds as well as the Round Oval where Diana, Princess of Wales is laid to rest.
