Thirlestane Castle is an ancient Border stronghold guarding the invasion route from England to Edinburgh. Dating from 1590, the Maitland family, including the Duke of Lauderdale, have lived in the Castle ever since.
The massive walls of the Castle contain magnificent staterooms of the 16th and 17th Centuries, telling a story that is intimately intertwined with that of Scotland itself. Of particular interest to younger visitors, the Nurseries of the Castle house a large collection of Edwardian, Victorian and Georgian toys, games and children’s clothes.
In addition to the Castle itself, the garden, woodland and riverside walks, picnic area and children’s adventure playground provide an ideal place to amuse, interest and entertain the whole family.
