Church of St John the Baptist

Church of St John the Baptist

Surrounded by the high ramparts and impressive earthworks of Stanwick Camp, an important settlement in pre-Roman Britain, this Early English church is in an area of great natural beauty. St John’s has the best collection of Anglo-Saxon grave markers in North Yorkshire.

A 9th-century cross-shaft found in the churchyard and carved stones set into the walls suggest an even earlier building than Early English occupied this site.
