Whithorn Priory & Museum

The site of the first Christian church in Scotland. Founded as 'Candida Casa' by St Ninian in the early 5th century it later became the cathedral church of Galloway. Visitors can now see the collection of early Christian carved crosses in a newly refurbished museum.

Urquhart Castle

One of the largest castles in Scotland, it dominates a rocky promontory on Loch Ness. Most of the existing buildings date from the 16th century. Explore the visitor centre with original artefacts, audio-visual presentation, shop and cafe.

Trinity House Maritime Museum

This fine Georgian mansion contains a treasure trove of maritime artefacts including paintings by Henry Raeburn. The site has been home to the Incorporation of Masters and Mariners since the Middle Ages. Many of the artefacts were donated by Leith sailors who travelled the world in centuries gone by.

Tolquhon Castle

Tolquhon was built for the Forbes family. The early 15th century tower was enlarged between 1584 and 1589 with a large mansion around the courtyard. Noted for its highly ornamented gatehouse and pleasance.

Threave Castle

Built by Archibald the Grim in the late 14th century, Threave Castle was an early stronghold of the Black Douglases. Around its base is an artillery fortification built before 1455 when the castle was besieged by James II. Ring the bell and the custodian will come to ferry you over.

Tantallon Castle

Set atop cliffs, looking out to the Bass Rock, this formidable castle was a stronghold of the powerful Douglas family. The castle has earthwork defences and a massive 80-foot high 14th century curtain wall and has endured frequent sieges.

Sweetheart Abbey

Founded in 1273 by Lady Devorgilla of Galloway in memory of her husband John Balliol. On her death, she was buried next to her husband's embalmed heart and the monks named their abbey in memory of her. The graceful ruin nestles between Criffel Hill and the Solway Firth.

Stirling Castle

High on a volcanic rock overlooking Bannockburn, Stirling Castle was a mighty fortress and luxurious royal residence. Easter 2011 sees the reopening of the Renaissance palace which was the childhood home of Mary, Queen of Scots. Visitors can also see the royal kitchens, Chapel Royal and Scotland's largest medieval Great Hall.

St Machars Cathedral Transepts

The nave and towers of the Cathedral remain in use as a church, and the ruined transepts are in care. In the south transept is the fine altar tomb of Bishop Dunbar (1514-32).

St Blanes Church
